Are bathroom vanities waterproof, even in timber?

Bathroom vanities are water resistant, not waterproof: the finish, the sealed edges and the top keep splashes out of the board or timber underneath.

From the Goldenwood workshop in Wetherill Park, family-owned and family-run, making custom timber pieces and joinery since 1988.

What are bathroom vanities made of?

Bathroom vanity materials range from particleboard and moisture resistant board to plywood and timber, in a freestanding cabinet or a wall hung vanity, with tops in stone, ceramic or a moulded basin.

Goldenwood makes its furniture in solid timber, but its kitchens, vanities and fitted joinery use engineered board finished in two-pack paint or polyurethane.

Most Goldenwood pieces leave the workshop in a two-pack polyurethane finish, and every kitchen, vanity and built-in does.

Stone tops can be honed or polished, then templated and fitted, so the top is made to match the cabinet base below it.

The workshop's CNC machine arrived in 2026, takes sheets up to 3.6 m by 1.2 m, and cuts board, solid timber and Corian.

Can a timber vanity handle a wet bathroom?

Timber and board both take up water wherever the finish is broken, at a cut edge, a chip or an open joint, and that is where moisture damage starts.

In a bathroom the water that does the harm is standing water: splashes left on the top, drips running down the doors and slow leaks inside the cabinet.

An oiled timber surface requires regular care: Goldenwood identifies an oiled finish at handover, and a light re-oil every 12 to 18 months keeps it even and water-resistant.

Goldenwood's vanities skip that upkeep: every one leaves the workshop in sprayed two-pack polyurethane over engineered board.

Goldenwood works with over 50 timber species for its furniture, and every timber listed on its materials page can be ordered in for a commission.

Choosing a bathroom vanity in a bathroom renovation

Goldenwood has made bathroom and powder-room vanities, kitchens and wardrobes in its Wetherill Park workshop since 1988.

Its consult can happen in your home: it walks the bathroom with you and brings timber samples and finishes to compare.

A custom vanity is measured on site, drawn to the room and installed by Goldenwood's own crew. See Goldenwood's custom bathroom vanities.

Before the first cut you see the vanity in immersive 3D visuals, with 2 design rounds included to settle its size and shape and your design preferences for the drawers and doors.

Every piece passes 2 inspection checkpoints: one before finishing for the structure, and one after finishing for the final surface.

Fitting out a new home with several bathrooms

Kitchen, wardrobe, vanity and full-home joinery can be drawn together with the furniture, so every bathroom and powder room in the house is planned as one.

After sign-off, shop drawings and a production schedule keep the workshop floor in step with the other trades on site.

The showroom has sample boards of its timbers and every finish, and it is open seven days, 9:30am to 5:30pm, without booking.

Matching furniture from the catalogue mostly ships within 8 to 14 weeks of design confirmation; the lead time for fitted joinery is confirmed in the quote.

Goldenwood's own crew delivers across all of Greater Sydney, the Central Coast, the Blue Mountains, Wollongong and the Southern Highlands included.

Water damage, the warranty and daily care

Goldenwood's craftsmanship warranty runs for 10 years and covers defects in the joinery, structure or finish that come from how the vanity was built.

The warranty excludes water, heat, impact and harsh cleaning agents, so water damage to a vanity is not covered.

For daily care, wipe the vanity with a soft, slightly damp cloth and wipe splashes and spills promptly.

Keep bleach, ammonia, methylated spirits, silicone sprays, household furniture polishes and citrus solvents off the finish.

If you find a fault on delivery, have it recorded on the delivery sheet and send photos within 7 days.

What to ask before you order a vanity for a wet bathroom
