How do you measure for built-in wardrobes?

From the Goldenwood workshop in Wetherill Park, family-owned and family-run, making custom timber pieces and joinery since 1988.

For built-in wardrobes, rough measurements are enough to start the conversation: Goldenwood measures the room on site before the wardrobe is drawn, so the final sizes come from that measure, not from your tape. Use the checklist below to note the room before the consult.

Measuring a bedroom you are renovating

Goldenwood's consult can happen in your home: it walks the bedroom with you, discusses the brief and brings timber samples and finishes.

Fitted wardrobes are measured on site, drawn to the room and installed by Goldenwood's own crew. See Goldenwood's built-in wardrobes.

From that measure, Goldenwood draws the wardrobe and builds immersive 3D visuals before the first cut, with 2 design rounds included.

You can also bring your rough measurements to the showroom, open 7 days from 9:30am to 5:30pm, with no booking needed.

The showroom has sample boards of every timber and finish, and Goldenwood can post you a small kit of timber chips and finish samples.

Measuring for fitted wardrobes in a new home

Goldenwood has made walk-in and fitted wardrobes, kitchens and vanities in its Wetherill Park workshop since 1988.

Wardrobes can be drawn together with the kitchen, the vanities and the furniture, so the joinery through the new home is planned as one.

Once you sign off, shop drawings and a production schedule keep the workshop in step with the builder and the other trades on site.

For fitted joinery, the lead time depends on the scope, the workshop's load and the timber, and it is confirmed in the quote.

Every piece passes 2 inspection checkpoints: one before finishing, for the structure, and one after finishing, for the final surface.

What a built-in wardrobe is made of

Fitted joinery, built-in wardrobes included, is made in engineered board finished in two-pack paint or polyurethane, while Goldenwood keeps solid timber for its freestanding furniture.

Every built-in leaves the workshop in a two-pack polyurethane finish, so a new wardrobe can match the kitchen and the vanities elsewhere in the house.

The workshop's CNC machine arrived in 2026, takes sheets up to 3.6 m by 1.2 m, and cuts board, solid timber and Corian to the drawings made from your measure.

Goldenwood makes walk-in wardrobes as well as fitted ones, and every one of them is customised to its owner's brief rather than chosen from a fixed range of sizes.

What happens after the measure

The quote is itemised and locked at sign-off, so the measure, the design and the price are settled before the workshop starts.

Goldenwood's own crew installs across all Sydney council areas, and in the Sydney metropolitan area it unwraps and checks the work in the room and takes the packaging away.

Goldenwood's craftsmanship warranty runs for 10 years and covers defects in the joinery, structure or finish that come from how the wardrobe was built.

Hinges, drawer runners and the other installed moving hardware carry a lifetime warranty.

If you find a fault on delivery, have it recorded on the delivery sheet and send photos within 7 days.

What to measure and note before the consult

  • The width of the wall from corner to corner, taken at the floor, at waist height and at the ceiling, because walls are rarely straight.
  • The height from the floor to the ceiling, taken at each end of the wall.
  • The depth you can give the wardrobe while still walking past the bed and opening the bedroom door.
  • Anything in the way: skirting boards, cornices, light switches, power points, windows and air vents.
  • What you will store: hanging space, drawers, shoes and shelves, and who uses each side.

Who installs a built-in wardrobe from Goldenwood?

Does Goldenwood make walk-in wardrobes as well?
Yes. Goldenwood makes walk-in and fitted wardrobes, each customised to the brief.
Can I change the design after the measure?
